River cruising is becoming increasingly popular for good reason. It’s a convenient way to see multiple countries in one trip without packing every few days and with ships typically docking close to city centers, Europe has never been more accessible.
The majority of the destinations you’ll visit on a river cruise are places you might not visit if you head to Europe via ocean or land and you are missing out because there are some amazing cultural experiences, local food & drink, and beautiful architecture to take in. River cruises also may have several ports per day since you’re traveling city to city which means you get to explore more.
I sailed on an AmaWaterways Danube Christmas Markets cruise and it was a fantastic experience. The holidays in Europe are absolutely magical with decorations everywhere, Christmas Markets stocked with local crafts and foods and so much gluhwein. I loved the ease of being able to walk off the ship and be in the middle of a European city – Regensburg & Passau were two of my favorites to explore. One morning I decided I was going to take a run after a tour and it was so easy to pop back onto the ship, get changed, and be off on the walking path that was next to the river. Compared to ocean cruises which we do a lot of, the convenience of a river cruise was exceptional.
Of course you don’t need a themed cruise to have a fantastic time, we can pick a destination on your bucket list and go from there. But if you do want some extra experiences, in addition to Christmas Market cruises there are so many themed river cruises out there, think: Wine & Beer, Tulip Time, Oktoberfest, Music, History, and more.
From guided tours by locals, hikes, bike rides, easy walking tours, and more – a river cruise is very accommodating for most abilities which is so nice and some even include your tours as a part of your cruise fare.
